A small pause in a loud day

I went to a cafe near the shelter a couple weeks ago, mostly because I needed somewhere to sit without feeling like I had to earn the chair. I ordered the cheapest coffee they had and took a seat by the window. Richmond was moving fast outside, but for a little while I could stay still.

The cafe had that warm, worn feeling, the kind that does not ask too many questions. I liked watching the door open and close, bringing in little bursts of street noise and then letting them fade. I was tired, but my mind felt softer there.

People passing with their own stories

Outside, there was a woman in a hurry, checking her watch over and over like the time might change if she stared hard enough. I know that feeling. Sometimes being rushed becomes its own kind of weight.

A little farther down, an older man sat with his paper, calm and unhurried. He did not seem like he was waiting for anything. He just seemed present. It made me think about how many lives brush past mine every day, each one full and complicated, while mine still feels uncertain and a little unsteady.

Sketching what I could keep

I pulled out my notebook and started sketching. I am not trying to make it perfect. I just like holding small moments before they slip away. My pencil moved slow, and I tried to capture the line of the window, the woman's quick steps, the man's stillness.

For a few minutes, I was not thinking about where I would sleep or what tomorrow would ask of me. I was just looking, noticing, and making marks on paper. That felt like enough.

What stayed with me

When I left, the coffee was gone and the sidewalk was still busy, but I carried a little quiet with me. I think that is why I keep sketching, and why I keep taking photos on my cracked phone even when everything else feels hard to hold.

Some places do not fix anything. They just give you room to breathe. That cafe gave me that, and I am grateful for it. Maybe tomorrow I will go back and sit by the same window. Maybe I will not. But for now, I have the drawing, and that is something ๐Ÿ™‚
